Rants about blogs.

May 5, 2008

Advice for this entry, don’t do/be like any of the following.

Ok blog-hopping around led me to a bunch of blogs and blogging trends that I really really hate. I want to see if you guys agree with me here.

The below are critiques of blog content, not blog authors. So if you can’t get that then you can just kiss my virtual ass. Except some of them do hit authors, well just take it in stride if you feel insulted. I’m just ranting after all.Freedom of expression, I was inspired so-to-speak by !@#$ that other people have posted.

1. Blogs with Original [crappy] Poetry/Songs

Ok, I get it that poetry is personal, creative, and shit. But when you read some bunch of words stringed together then Shift+F7ed to death, it’s really really annoying.

I mean I’m no professional writer but hey anyone [hopefully] has a bullshit detector right?

Specially if the poems just don’t have any substance, random example:

Frigid. I feel.
Lachrymose. I am.
The present. Is consummated.

Which could translate to or really mean

Cold. I feel.
Sad. I am.
Today. Is done.

Just saying.

or

I feel so lost
I am blind
Where am I going?

They all say the same thing to some extent, yes?

And then people comment and say: OMFG your poem is teh l33tzorzz!!! eleventy-one!!!! I wish I wuz as talented as uuuuuuuuu! I just bRaInGaSmEd!!?!?!!?!

It’s a mockery of Neruda, Keats, etc.

Unless if the authors were still in high school. It’s understandable.

Oh and this one, PLAGIARISTS.

Sometimes people paste something really really good from some random poet. It’s good and all but the thing is when people read that poem and then read the rest of the blog, the readers will probably think that the author cannot possibly have the mental capacity to write something like this. Therefore, you lose credibility, see poser.

2. Blogs With No Content

Ok so here’s an entry with a song/movie poster/popular poem/movie trailer and then…

Absolutely nothing.

What is up with that really? Not even an "I just want to share because…"

3. Blogs with Txtspik or cAmEl HuMp or Baby Speak

Grbe tlga 2day I wnt to mOa at nakita ko si Chris Tiu, ay laglag panti aq.

Text speak is fine with celphones, I get it because the space is limited (160 characters). But let’s leave it there shall we? Seriously. You’re using a full keyboard unlike phone number pads. And blogs have virtually no spatial text limits!

CaMeL hUmP text just pisses me off. What is this? A pithy attempt at being cute or something? No examples here I find it mind-boggling how some people can actually type like that.

"Weh" What the hell is that? I know it means "really??????!??!?!?!!?" or "ows" but it sounds like a cross between "what?" and "I’m-just-too-fucking-lazy-to-talk-so-I’ll-make-baby-sounds-so-you’ll-find me-cute!"

Except you’re not.

I am reminded of a friend’s definition of "cute:"

"ugly but interesting." So when a guy says you’re cute, he might be mocking you! Just saying, you never know. Just like "exotic" can be insulting. But that’s material for another post. Which brings us to…

4. Blogs in Trajectories

I really like Ironman. Robert Downy Jr was sooooooooooo hot in that walk like a man movie ano ba yun? Hay I want to make be with Tom Cruise in that Last Samurai AY!!!!!!!!!! FAFAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

(I have nothing against the gay community, at least not in this post.)

I admit that I’m guilty of this sometimes but I try to keep things as tight as possible. Hello I went to the school of AWESOME!

I’m just saying, it helps to read those "About Me" bits because when you see words like "neurotic,"  "hyper," or "crazy" you had fair warning.

5. Poser Blogs

Look at me and my totally photoshopped abs. This picture is shot from the waist up so you can’t see the whole package (pun very very intended)! Get over here and send me your number so we can go "dancing" sometime and when the next one comes along I can cheat on you.

Or look at me, I’m THE go-to guy for <name random topic>. But when you look at the posts they look obviously copy-pasted.

I realize that this is the internet where anyone can be well anyone. But still if you’re going to be a certain personality, fix your goddamn image so you don’t come off half-baked. Loses credibility don’t you agree?

6. Overusing Ellipses

Please… Don’t… Go… I… Just… Need… Some… Time… To… Comp… lete… This… Sen… t… e… n… c… e…

I guess talking is hard for some people. I know some people find good use for ellipses:

So… You wanna…

Yeah… Got any…

Here…

Let’s go…

7. Horrible Spelling and Grammar

Call me the grammar Nazi! Nah just kidding, I mean little mistakes like "sometiems I think the poeple don’t care at all." are fine, well sorta. you can clearly see that the mistake was made because of mistimed key punching. But mistakes like:

The people her bread like rabbits that’s why the there country will never be better than you’res.

Grammar… oh grammar. Sometimes it’s really hard you gotta admit, I’m not talking about dangling modifiers and really tough subject-verb agreement but simple ones like:

The reason why I am felt bad about the whole incident is because you is not listening at all.

F7 is your friend, most of the time.

8. Conio

See poser. Or not. I’m sure you like made alam what I meant na before diba? Make isip, like NOW NA!

9. Tagwhore Posts

When a blog entry has tags that say:

vagina, woman, sexy, sex, position, cunt, vajayjay, Brad Pitt, condom, sex tape, scandal, http://askgreg.i.ph

Then you see that the entry is about the evils of contraceptives you just have to get pissed. Attention-starved/Capitalist blogs!

10. Chain Posts credit goes to Van

And you thought chain mail was bad. The culture just doesn’t disappear. Wish come true things? Jeez.

But the guilty trip ones are horrid.

"Send this to all of your friends." Which is followed by that Bible passage that says those who are ashamed of the Lord will burn in hell. Seriously. What the heck is that?

Or that you will be haunted by some ghost, with "proof"? That other people have died? Jeez, they’re just text. And don’t get me started about hoaxes. Bloggers please be responsible enough to check if your data is correct. Go to www.snopes.com or something.

11. Spam Comments to X Links

Don’t you hate it when people drop by your blog and say "blog hop/leaving footprints/I was here/ then x links?"

Say something substantial first.

~

Remember when these stop, the jologs can stop too. So spread the word.

Posted by Maingay at May 5, 2008, 10:10 pm

you pretty much said everything.

personally, I don’t really mind encountering blogs like those while I’m blog hopping. Unless they hopped back to tag me with a…umm.. chain-post (you know the times when some blogger try to impost you to copy-paste a post he’d/she’d copy-pasted herself, and then make you spread it to x number of people)

Hmmm… maybe you could categorize those kind of bloggers.

Posted by van at May 6, 2008, 5:10 am

Posted by spliceanddice at May 6, 2008, 11:25 pm

I’m guilty with the weh thing and I don’t do number 1, but I think some people are entitled to their emo posts when they feel shitty. After all, it is their blog.

However, I think you stepped on some people’s toes here. I mean the guilty ones. hehe

Keep it up man.

Posted by 10 at May 10, 2008, 3:27 am

gagatungan ko na nga to.. personally, i have no issues against people doing their own thing..

but..

@10 and @yagster,

aren’t you a bit on the “double standards” side of things?

Posted by frances at May 10, 2008, 8:28 am

wahahaha. I love this post especially entries #1 & 5.

Yung sa #1, hindi lang sa poetry. Flowery words sometimes just BITE. It’s a blog, not the Bible they’re writing do I don’t really get why they have to say, er, “conflagration” instead of just “fire.” I hate I-memorized-the-dictionary blogs. They’re writing to impress, not to express, and to a certain extent makes them #5.

I can stand grammar glitches. Pero konti lang. Otherwise, hindi ko na tinutuloy magbasa.

GREAT POST, VINCE. ;)

Posted by vince at May 11, 2008, 11:39 pm

You pretty much covered all the generic annoying stuff about blogs there. Nice job.

But if I were to add another thing it’d be ‘excessive profanity’ perhaps. The hate comments above made me cringe a little. Medyo malutong lang kasi. Well, I don’t know if that’s just me.

Posted by alia at May 12, 2008, 7:11 pm

@alia

Thank you for your concern. However I believe that “excessive” is relative.

Malutong sa malutong but I also believe that if you can’t take, don’t dish.

vince.

your post is a complete exercise of redundancy, futility and use of old problems.

nice post. i enjoyed reading this one, up to the last comment ^^

Posted by Jack n Jill at June 7, 2008, 2:30 pm

i think all this blogger’s saying is that if you want to express yourself in writing, just make sure that it’s r-e-a-d-a-b-l-e.

there’s a proper place and time for everything (including ellipses, hyphens, and text lingo). yoshke’s right in implying that we should not sacrifice content just to make your entries look profound or impressive.

Posted by TBB at June 8, 2008, 12:16 pm

your observation is very true. but really each writer is different and he or she has the freedom to write whatever that person what to write in a style that he or she can understand well regardless of who reads it.

i get headache when i read blog entries that is txt type. :)

Posted by arlene at June 12, 2008, 4:19 pm

Sabi nga eh pang-HS ang blogging… a gay thing.

Pare remember di sila journalis or perfecto sa english. ‘Di sila nag susulat sa dyaryo.

Pre, sa pinas tau. di lahat ng nagbloblog sa english ay perfecto. Sa mga sinabi mo may mga wrong grammar ka din. Pare even western people wrong grammar pa rin sila.

Opinion mo yan.

Nice try pre. 5 centavos for u.

xxx

Posted by icebox at June 25, 2008, 10:48 pm

eto lang yan eh, matinding tanong… “Are you perfect enough to judge other peoples work”? LOLx… lalo na ung about sa poetry… pfft…ahehehe…

Posted by babyface at June 30, 2008, 7:35 pm

I fully concur with what the author(s) say. I especially dislike 1, 3, 6, 7 and 8.

I’ll discuss these in seriatim

#1When I was in high school they’d make us write poetry even until college we did that. I sucked at it, and I think most other people suck at it as well. Friends of mine write poetry in their notebooks, away from sight because they know full well the consequences when other people see their “poetry”.

With #3 I think its sheer laziness or a refusal on the part of the guilty author’s hands to transmit anything substantial from his brain to the keyboard.

#6 refers to a matter of style. Which should never interfere with clarity or the ability to get the message across. Using too much ellipses is still something I don’t quite understand.

#7 Is proof that the internet is a fully democratic system. Even those who are illiterate can write! ITS A MIRACLE! Seriously #7 is a symptom of the rapidly eroding system of education (when it comes to Filipinos). Or at the same time it could be a disconnect between the author’s mother language’s syntax and the English language’s. If the mother language demands that “I go here” is the proper form then chances are the author will write “I go here” instead of “I went here” or “I’ll go here” or “I’ve been there”.

#8 This bastardizes the English language and the Filipino language. The dignity of either language is harmed with this confusion. It is shameful and should be stopped.

When these offenses stop the jologs can stop too? Nope. When the stupid stops then and only then can the jologs stop. I doubt it but we’ll be here fighting the good fight.

Posted by Chris at July 13, 2008, 11:33 pm

There is an error in grammar on my part. The first line should read “I fully concur with what the author says” instead of author(s) say.

Posted by Chris at July 13, 2008, 11:57 pm

Well, all I can say is… I really enjoyed reading this.
Sapul ako sa grammar… hehe!
Anyway…
Nice post!

Posted by Bleake at July 28, 2008, 2:45 am

nice entry, and bluntly true. i was kinda guilty on one point you made, but it made me laugh. to each his own. :)

Posted by mordsith at September 2, 2008, 6:35 pm

can’t think of anything worthwhile to add… but you sure made your point. blog on!

Posted by onyxx at September 17, 2008, 5:37 pm

i spent more time reading the comments rather than the post itself. :P my, you got yourself some violent reactions there greggy. got death threats yet? XD

nyway, i’ve come across a lot of those blogs you described and they really don’t bother me (except for the spams). for me, they are just trying to express themselves, sometimes, in ways we will find utterly ridiculous or senseless.

rule of thumb here, mind your own blog. its their blog. its their life. :)
