Because life’s not fair

April 9, 2008

The other day my colleagues and I had a discussion about how athletes, college varsity players in particular, get all the luck. They’re usually tall, athletic, and most importantly have a hot girlfriend.

Sorry female readers but you understand the point right? :p

Several people find it unfair. After all some of these athletes aren’t the sharpest pencils in the bunch. Some get special treatment with regard to academics. Why should they get all the attention, glory, swooning girls, and eventually money from playing professional ball?

The thing is, these people usually don’t see how hard the training these players underwent. Varsity training is a science, I have a friend in DLSU who is required to jog/run from Taft to Binondo and back as part of their training. They’ve also done wheelbarrow exercises on the staircases of their taller buildings. There’s a certain prestige to be able to make it to Team A, but the road to that is long and arduous. Varsity players usually spend a large percentage of the day training. They also have to watch their diet. There are many things that they can’t normally do that "other" people can do freely. But if you want the body (physical aptitude), then do the same as they do. It takes a lot of discipline and time.

The rest of the anatomy of a varsity player however is charisma and genetics. And in many ways, life is not fair. Some people were born tall. Some people were born with the proper built for sports. Some people were born with great personalities. There isn’t much you can do about what you were born it. Say if you came from parents who were both short then the genetics would most likely dictate that you’d be short as well. The problem starts when you compare yourself to certain people, in this case the athletes. You, and most often our parents :p, have to understand that everyone is different. But the important thing to know is that, this is YOUR life. Why would you want to compare your way of living with another person when you know that he/she is living his/her life differently from yours?

Life is about winging it, playing with the cards that you’ve been dealt. It’s about making the best choices that you can make and doing the best you can each time. In the end the people who can accept their shortcomings but keep chugging along with their life are the happiest people of all. These people know what they want and find out how to get them. So and choose the things that you want for yourself, with the way that you live and take whatever steps you can to achieve them.

For example in Memoirs of a Geisha , the protagonist utters this quotable quotable:

Sayuri Nitta: [turns around to face him again] Can’t you see? Every step I have taken, since I was that child on the bridge, has been to bring myself closer to you.

And what happened after?

Happy endings come to people who deserve them. Work hard, play hard.

Remember

You can’t change your situation sometimes, but you can change the way you deal with it.

My .02 cents.

Wow, what a nice angle to look at. Really nice post.

But you see, attractiveness and appeal are the main ingredient of these people getting hot girls. And those word vary with every peoples’ view.

Lucky for those with blind wives. Lol.
